Threat Assessment
A document used in our middle school
As a principal, troubled youth were a constant concern. Each week we would meet to address students with special needs in a meeting we titled MDT, Multi-Disciplinary Team. The team included administrators, counselors, phycologist, and teachers. Whenever another adult had relevant information to share, they would be included. During this time decisions were made about how to proceed. Options were many ranging from scheduling a parent meeting to providing interventions.
Sometimes it was deemed necessary to conduct a threat assessment. I created the following form to guide these meetings. It is a compilation of ideas from many sources and written to fit our school’s specific policies and procedures. If you have ever wondered what happens behind the closed door of a school, this provides some insight.
Threat Assessment
The Building Team should initiate a Threat Assessment Screening when a student makes a threat, or if there is concern that a student may be about to act out violently. Information should be shared among all members of the building Team, as this is essential to the effectiveness of the Treat Assessment Screening and to the development of a Plan.
